Laurent Pelly’s staging of Manon took Covent Garden by storm when it played in 2010. The production now comes from the Met in New York with Anna Netrebko in the lead role. Alongside her, tenor Piotr Beczala plays an intense Chevalier des Grieux.

Manon and Des Grieux run away together to Paris, but she soon betrays him for a life of luxury with the wealthy Brétigny. Surrounded by riches and showered in attention from admirers Manon becomes the toast of the town.

However, she soon hears of her former lover’s decision to take holy orders and rushes to him. He has grown cold towards her, but eventually his resolve is broken and they run away together once more.

It doesn’t end well though – Manon is deported for charges of immorality and dies of consumption in her lover’s arms.
