This week's free download is a work that likely written by Leonora d'Este, daughter of Duke Alfoso I and Lucrezia Borgia. This motet, O Salutaris Hostia, comes from a collection of 16 anonymous motets, the chants and texts of which link it to the convent where Leonora was abbess. The directors of Musica Secreta, who have recorded the collection, believe she is the most likely author of the music, making her the first known female composer to be published.

The recording receieved a four-star review in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine. 'Hypnotic polyphony and static harmonies evoke a world of intense spiritual contemplation,' writes Kate Bolton-Porciatti, 'while the quirky use of dissonance suggests a composer outside the musical mainstream.'
