This week’s free download is the first movement, Allegro moderato, of Haydn’s Sonata in C minor, performed by pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout and recorded on Harmonia Mundi. It was awarded five stars for both performance and recording in the May issue of BBC Music Magazine.

This piece for piano was written by Haydn in what is now known as his ‘Sturm and Drang’ period, a period between the 1760s and 70s when his writing was particularly impassioned and somewhat stressed in style. It is therefore more emotional than some of his earlier sonatas, many of which were written for teaching methods.

‘Bezuidenhout imbues the opening Allegro of the C minor Sonata with a grandeur tinged with pathos’, writes Michael Church. ‘The instrument which this South African player has chosen is an unusually fine example of the fortepiano, with a singing warmth of tone.’
