This week’s free download is the first movement, Allegretto, from Bartók’s Suite for Piano, performed by Julien Libeer and recorded on the Harmonia Mundi label. It comes from an album of piano works by Bach and Bartók, which was awarded four stars for performance and five for recording in the April issue of BBC Music Magazine.

‘It’s almost impossible to fault his playing’, writes our reviewer Jessica Duchen. ‘The Bartók suites, with their uniquely unsettling mixture of earthy dance rhythms and eerie nocturnal rustles and shivers, have the same sense of minute attention to detail and intensity of focus; tone quality is full and rich, with voices vividly layered and colours plentiful.’

Bartók’s Suite Op. 14 for solo piano was first performed in 1919, in Budapest. Unlike many of Bartók’s other works, it features no folk tunes or references to melodies from the folk tradition. The first movement in particular uses many elements of tonal music, but has elements of chromaticism peppered throughout. This is one of Bartók’s most substantial works for piano.
