This week's free download is Mozart's Divertimento in D major, performed by Camerata Nordica under the baton of Terje Tønnesen. It received four stars for both performance and recording in the February issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Mozart, age 16, composed the three Salzburg Divertimentos during a period of down-time when he was writing Lucio Silla, his new opera for the 1773 Milan carnival season. Writing the divertimentos probably provided a welcome break from the ambitious Italian-language opera. It is likely that Mozart composed the divertimentos to be performed in the homes of Salzburg residents.

'Although playing modern instruments, the musicians take full account of 18th century performance practice,' writes Bayan Northcott. 'They shape and colour phrases by bow pressure rather than sustaining them with vibrato. Attack and articulation are crisply defined and differentiated.'
